An Established Championship Course

As the 2024 Paris Olympics get closer to kicking off, the spotlight is shining brighter on the host course - Le Golf National. Located just outside the city in Guyancourt, this Albatros layout will showcase the best men's and women's golfers from around the world competing for medals. Having played Le Golf National several times over the years and witnessed major championships held there, I want to share some of my insights on what to expect.

A Rolling Test of Precision

Designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge, this course sits on the site of former farmland transformed into a rolling landscape featuring plenty of elevation changes throughout. Von Hagge, best known for his iconic Marlboro Man commercials before switching to design, helped shape tight fairways and small greens that demand precision. Having tested the best players for decades as host of the French Open, Le Golf National certainly won't yield low scores easily.

Their vision from 1990 emphasizes accuracy over power across the natural terrain's 45 feet of elevation change. Additionally, the nearby city of Paris and crowd-friendly stadium design provide a world-class setting for around 30,000 spectators.

A History of Challenging the Best Players

In my experience, the test intensifies significantly the farther around the course one progresses. The early holes allow for birdie opportunities but also sneak in pitfalls near the greens. Then the challenges compound down the stretch.

Established stars like Nick Faldo and rising talents today affirm this major championship test as both tough and fair. Finishing holes introduce water risks, while its reputation intensifies as scoring pressure mounts.

Intensity Amplified under Pressure

A string of three late holes bring lakes into play off the tee, to greenside bunkers, making any mistakes there especially punishing. When the Ryder Cup was held here in 2018, the pressure seemed almost unbearable coming home.

Spectacular Views for Guests

Beyond the compelling layout, the stadium design offers spectators the ability to follow every shot from almost anywhere on the course. Vertical inclines and sloping angles place audiences right on top of the action. With Paris just a short drive away also, the Olympic golf venue seems uniquely situated to attract huge crowds. The modernized clubhouse and practice facilities further cement Le Golf National as a world-class destination.

Primed for Greatness on Golf's Biggest Stage

In summary, with its strategic design testing all areas of players' games and passionate fans lining the routes, Le Golf National looks primed to deliver an unforgettable stage for Olympic gold this summer. The top contenders will need to avoid any watery or sandy second shots late and maintain composure to the end. I expect to see thrilling performances and couldn't imagine a better venue to host golf's return to the Games.
