Tropical Storm Debby Postpones Opening Round of Wyndham Championship

The Wyndham Championship, the final regular season event on the PGA Tour schedule, has postponed its opening round due to impending effects from Tropical Storm Debby.

Tournament officials, working closely with local authorities and the PGA Tour, made the decision to push back the start of play from Thursday to Friday as Debby continues to impact the Greensboro, North Carolina area with heavy rain and strong winds.

While players and fans were eager to get the tournament underway and begin the final push towards the lucrative FedEx Cup Playoffs, safety had to be the top priority according to Tournament Director Bobby Powell.

“This decision was a difficult one for us to make with our partners at the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our top priority,” Tournament Director Bobby Powell said. “The most-recent forecast looks like the storm could clear our area sometime Friday.”

The latest forecasts project Debby clearing out by Friday afternoon, allowing safe conditions to be established for golf to resume at Sedgefield Country Club. Over 4 inches of rainfall is expected on Thursday with flash flooding a major concern given how saturated the grounds already are around the course.

"The storm is moving into the Greensboro area, with heavy rain and gusty winds expected throughout the day. Rainfall could reach 4 to 6 inches by day's end, with a flash flood warning also in effect for the region," said the tour's official weather forecast.

The National Weather Service's warning about Tropical Storm Debby underscores how perilous conditions are for traveling in and around Greensboro at the moment. Their description of a "dangerous and life-threatening situation" sent a clear message that unnecessary trips or commute should absolutely be avoided.

Further adding to the urgency is that this is the last chance for players to improve their ranking or earn tournament wins to qualify for the playoffs. Notable names in the field like Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris and Team USA Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley will have to wait an extra day to tee it up as they battle for positioning. Some others are fighting simply for their Tour cards as the new season looms.

Weather permitting, we hope to see gripping first round action on Friday as the Tour's regular season races to its conclusion.
