Scottie Scheffler's Secret Weapon: Titleist Pro V1 Ball

Scottie Scheffler's Secret Weapon: Titleist Pro V1 Ball

It has been an absolutely incredible season for American superstar Scottie Scheffler and he added yet another jewel to his crown by winning Olympic gold in Paris. What made this victory even more impressive was the comeback he had to make, erasing a four shot deficit on the final day to seal the deal. Through it all, there was one constant in Scheffler's bag - the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball.

As our readers would know, I have always been impressed with Scheffler's ball-striking ability and his unmatched short game prowess. But it is his loyalty to Titleist Pro V1 that really stands out. While some players like to experiment with different ball models, Scheffler has relied solely on Pro V1 for years now and it has delivered time and time again. At the press conference after his gold medal triumph, Scheffler once again praised Pro V1:

"It gives me the best performance across the board. I can take off spin and apply spin. The ball does everything I need it to do, whether it’s going long and straight off the tee or hitting some nice, soft nippers around the green."

I had a chance to briefly chat with Scottie to learn more about how he puts new golf balls through their paces before deciding whether they're worthy of a spot in the bag. He told me the most crucial evaluation comes from his precise 80-yard wedge shot.

“Most of the testing I’ll do is to make sure it’s going the right distance and has the right feel around the greens. That’s where I’ll start. After that, one of the things I always like to test is an 80-yard shot where I’m going to hit it really low with a lot of spin, and really high with a lot of spin to see the differences. With the Pro V1, I have the ability to hit that really low driving shot. If I was to hit that shot with a regular range ball, I wouldn’t be able to [hit those shots].”

I've certainly noticed Scheffler's methodical testing process always begins with the short game. When new iterations come out, he wastes no time rolling sleeves up and getting to work in the practice bunker and chipping green. This tells you how seriously Scheffler takes evaluating a ball's feel and feedback on delicate short-sided shots that can make or break a round.

In my experience reviewing equipment, I completely agree that starting short and working your way back is the clever way to truly understand a ball's overall performance characteristics. Just like a player analyzes their own game, you have to test the nuances near the green first before assessing longer shots that rely more on power than finesse.

It's no accident that Scheffler, with possibly the best hands in the game, identifies so closely with Pro V1 through this process. When the chips are down, he knows that ball will never let him down when the margin for error is smallest. A real testament to Titleist's relentless innovation.

I couldn't agree more after witnessing Scheffler's title charge first hand in Paris. Some key shots that showed why Pro V1 is his clear first choice included a phenomenal lob wedge manoeuver on 15 that set up a crucial birdie and the nervous 25 footer he holed on the 72nd hole to seal the deal. After the round, I asked Scheffler if there was any chance he'd consider another ball in the future. His reply was firm and short - "Absolutely not!".

The three-piece construction of the Titleist Pro V1 is truly ingenious. With a softer urethane mantle and proprietary casing layer between the cover and core, it allows Scheffler to maximize both power and finesse. The high inertia core provides his powerful swings with a penetrating ball flight off the tee.

But that soft casing is what really intrigues me. It manages to decouple spin characteristics, giving Scheffler giddy-up with his driver while maintaining the optimum amount of cover deformation and greenside control. Quite simply, the Pro V1 is two completely different balls - a muscle car off the tee and a surgeons scalpel for intricate short game magic.

It's no accident that nearly every pro on Tour has made the switch to three-piece urethane balls in recent years. The engineering perfection allows them to have their cake and eat it too. Much like Scheffler's season, the Pro V1 just keeps elevating performance to new levels round after round. No doubt it will continue to drive his success for many majors and Olympiads to come!

The conclusion is clear then - for the world's best golfer Scottie Scheffler, the Titleist Pro V1 remains the perfect ball to help deliver championship glory. It will be fascinating to see if his success rubs off on amateur golfers giving this ball model a try. Be sure to check back as I'll have my full hands-on Pro V1 review coming soon. For now, congratulations again to Scheffler and Titleist on another incredible result!
