After coming close in previous years, Kapaun Mt. Carmel golfer Asher Whitaker cemented his legacy with a Kansas Class 5A individual state championship last week.
The Wichita native entered his senior season with an impressive resume, having won a City League title and regional championship with a record score of 63. However, the one prize that had eluded him was a state title.
Whitaker changed that on Tuesday by shooting rounds of 70 and 71 to come from behind on the final day and claim his first championship.
“I came really close all four years. The two runner-ups the previous years kind of sucked,” said the state champion. “I’ve just had some crazy competition which feels good because it really makes you earn that win.”
Coming from a family of successful Kapaun golfers, Whitaker now joins his two sisters in winning a state title. He said capping his high school career as a champion helps make the past four years seem to fly by.
“It’s crazy that it’s over,” Whitaker said. “I feel like everyone always says the time flies, but it actually does. It felt like just yesterday that I was starting high school golf.”
With his high school career in the rearview mirror, Whitaker will continue his golf career at the University of Oklahoma. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of the many All-Americans coached by the Sooners staff.
