Justin Rose's Caddie Wishes Xander Schauffele Was More of a "Wanker"

Justin Rose's Caddie Wishes Xander Schauffele Was More of a "Wanker"

The British Open at Royal Troon produced yet another Xander Schauffele victory march, but this time there was an added layer of intrigue from Justin Rose's long-time caddie Mark Fulcher.

After Schauffele carded a scorching 65 on Sunday to surge past the field and claim his third major title, Fulcher spoke to reporters and had nothing but praise for the newly-crowned champion. He called Xander "top class" and admitted he couldn't find any real weaknesses in his game.

But then Fulcher dropped the best quote of the day - he confessed that while Schauffele seems like a "lovely fellow", you'd almost want him to be "a bit of a wanker."

Now normally caddies don't openly wish ill will upon other players, but it seems Fulcher was just acknowledging what we were all thinking - it's annoying when someone is that good and that nice. Like dude, you gotta have some flaws we can laugh about!

When pressed further about what he meant, Fulcher elaborated that "He couldn't be nicer. He's a lovely fellow. It's just nice to know the lad. He's top class." So while Xander's talents clearly irk others on the course, even they have to admit he appears as polished off the course as on it.

It remains to be seen if adding another major to his résumé will go to Schauffele's head at all. But until we get confirmation of any wankery, Fulcher and the rest of the golf world will just have to accept that one of the best is also one of the nicest. Only time will tell if Xander can keep up his winning ways and likable guy routine.

What was the outcome of the British Open 2024 for Justin Rose

Justin Rose had reason to feel both pride and frustration after narrowly missing out on the Claret Jug at Royal Troon. The veteran contended all week and held the lead for a portion of the tournament thanks to a hot start.

But things turned on one fateful hole. On the par-3 12th, Rose left a crucial putt just short of the cup, missing an opportunity to widen his lead. This allowed Xander Schauffele to steal the momentum by draining consecutive birdies down the stretch.

While Rose shot a respectable 4-under 67 on Sunday, it wasn't enough to overcome Schauffele's blistering finish. He ended up tying for second, just two shots back of the champion.

In a moment of reflection after the final round, Rose spoke about feeling he let a big chance slip away when he failed to convert on 12. He acknowledged that miss shifted the entire complexion of the tournament in favor of Schauffele.

Still, Rose held his head high for putting together a strong performance on golf's biggest stage. Even if this one got away, he proved once more that he can contend in major championships.
