Scottie Scheffler has once again cemented himself at the top of the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake. After a dominant campaign that saw the world number one record six PGA Tour victories, including a second Masters green jacket in April, Scheffler also claimed gold at the Olympics in Paris last month.
He holds a sizable lead in the FedEx Cup points race, sitting over 1,200 ahead of second placed Xander Schauffele. In third is Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, but the margin between him and Scheffler is even greater at more than 2,700 points. Both Schauffele and Matsuyama will look to reel in the tournament top seed this week at East Lake, where the pressure is on Scheffler to convert his stellar season into ending as FedEx Cup champion.
While Scottie Scheffler has enjoyed an unprecedented season, he once again heads into the Tour Championship in the familiar position of starting with a two-shot advantage at 10-under par.
This will be the sixth year the tournament employs a handicapped system where golfers are given starting scores based on their FedEx Cup ranking coming into East Lake. As the No. 1 seed, Scheffler holds a two-stroke edge over running mate Xander Schauffele, and a sizeable 10 shot lead over No. 30 Justin Thomas.
The new format was introduced as the old set-up saw players occasionally win the Tour Championship itself but fall short of the overall FedEx Cup title. It also proved complicated for fans to follow the points. Now, whoever hoists the trophy at East Lake after four rounds, including their handicap shots, will be crowned FedEx Cup champion and take home the record $25 million first-place prize.
With the handicap system in place, the starting strokes for all 30 qualifiers have been revealed ahead of this high-stakes PGA Tour finale.

While Scheffler holds a handy two-shot advantage from the 10-under mark, history shows the top seed is far from assured victory at East Lake. In fact, the No.1 starter has won this event only twice in the last five years using the new format.
Scheffler himself held the top spot the past two seasons only to falter. Defending champion Viktor Hovland also came from behind last year, charging past Scheffler despite being two back.
Rory McIlroy provides perhaps the best example of overcoming a big deficit. In 2016 and 2019 title wins, McIlroy clawed his way back from deficits of five and six shots respectively on the final day.
All the drama will unfold over the next four days at East Lake, with early coverage from Golf Channel before network broadcasts on NBC take over. Be sure to tune in from 1pm ET each day to follow the excitement of the PGA Tour's finale, where millions in bonus money and FedEx Cup glory awaits. All eyes will be on if Scheffler can at last convert his top spot into a major season crown.
