The 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland wrapped up on Sunday with American Xander Schauffele emerging victorious. By defeating compatriots Justin Rose and Billy Horschel in a playoff, Schauffele captured his second career major title and with it a record payday of $3.1 million courtesy of the event's astronomical purse.

This year the R&A increased the total purse for the Open Championship to a record $17 million, with the champion's share surpassing the previous high by $100,000. Schauffele bested a stacked field that saw over a dozen players in contention going into the final round. His playoff victory over Rose and Horschel was the culmination of a stellar week that saw him rise to the top of the packed leaderboard.

In finishing solo second, Rose collected $1.443 million while Horschel took home $1.443 million for his share of second place. South African Thriston Lawrence finished one shot out of the playoff in fourth place, earning $876,000. Russell Henley and Shane Lowry rounded out the top five, claiming $705,000 and $611,000 respectively.

Jon Rahm, Sungjae Im and Scottie Scheffler tied for seventh and made $451,834 each.

In all, 61 players cashed checks at Royal Troon even after missing the cut, with all sharing at least a $8,750 payday. The increased purses across golf's premier events is a testament to the game's rise in popularity and viewership worldwide. With the largest of the majors now offering record top prizes, the rewards of hoisting a major championship trophy have never been greater. Schauffele is surely enjoying the fruits of his labor after securing his place among golf's elite.
