Marquette, MI - The Marquette Sentinels captured the team championship while Kaleb Chipelewski earned medalist honors, leading the charge at the 2024 MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 Boys Golf Finals on Wednesday.
Hosting the event at their home Marquette Golf Club course, the Sentinels distanced themselves from the field by shooting an impressive winning score of 300. Houghton placed second at 321, followed by Escanaba in third at 325.
Chipelewski's round of 72 edged out teammate Boden Moore, who carded a 73, for the individual title. Baraga-L'Anse's Cage Osterman shot 74 to take third. Tying for fourth at 75 were Marquette's Jack Pond, Houghton's Brenden Jukuri and Escanaba's Shane Wallin.
"These kids put in so much time practicing and it paid off," said Marquette coach Ben Smith. "To shoot 300 on your home course against this competition is truly outstanding."
Moore felt he played well but struggled with his putting. Pond described his round as a "MJ-flu-type game" after Jordan, getting off to a slow start but finishing strong.
The Sentinels showcased their depth by placing three golfers in the top 5 individually. It marked their first U.P. Division 1 title since 2016.
With the top team and medalist, it was a banner day for Marquette at the UP finals. Their performance confirmed why they are considered one of the elite programs in the region.
