World number one Nelly Korda was considered the player to beat at this week's U.S. Women's Open. But her title hopes got off to an unthinkable start in the first round on Thursday.
After a bogey at the 10th hole, her opening hole, Korda bounced back with a par at the 11th. That's when her day suddenly turned disastrous. At the downhill par-3 12th, the windy conditions proved treacherous for the field. Korda's tee shot sailed long and her next attempt ended up in the front creek.
Things only got worse from there. Multiple drops and a few more shots into the water followed. She just couldn't catch a break. It wasn't until her eighth shot that Korda finally got on the green, some 11 feet away. But she missed the putt to save 9 and tapped in for a jaw-dropping score of 10.
The golfing world could hardly believe what they had just witnessed. A 10 is almost unheard of, even for amateurs. Understandably shaken, Korda limped to an 8-over start after three holes - far outside the projected cut line.

While the LPGA's top-ranked player usually makes the course look easy, Lancaster showed golf can humble anyone on a bad day. Korda faces an uphill battle just to play the weekend after an opening round to forget as quickly as possible.
