In what can only be described as an epic snafu, veteran pro Graeme McDowell finds himself in a spot of bother with the LIV folks after popping positive on a drug test at their Nashville event. According to sources, G-Mac's sample showed traces of R-methamphetamine, which just so happens to be on the banned substances list.
In a lengthy Twitter/X rant, McDowell 'fessed up that the culprit was an over-the-counter Vicks nasal spray he's been using to help with sleep - because we all know jet lag is no joke out here on the LIV circuit.
“As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE),” McDowell wrote. “Unfortunately I did not think to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine, and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.”

But while Vicks is safe enough for any of us regular joes to buy off the pharmacy shelf, as a pro athlete you've gotta clear ANY meds with the anti-doping police first. McDowell says he simply didn't think of doing that with something so innocuous. Way to give the folks in the drug-testing van something to talk about back at the lab!
As punishment, LIV has slapped G-Mac with a one-tournament suspension and a hefty $125,000 fine. And get this - his results from Nashville have been DQ'd too! So not only did my guy finish a sorry 42nd, but now it's like he wasn't even there. Ouchy. McDowell says he fully accepts the sanctions, and respects LIV's need to enforce the rules strictly. Gotta keep that sporty sport clean, you know.
In true contrarian Mac fashion, he couldn't resist a cheeky parting shot too. While not calling any other tours out by name cough PGA cough, he praised LIV for their "rigorous" anti-doping compared to some mystery circuits. Sounds like someone isn't a fan of how lax the drug police are elsewhere! Give 'em hell Graeme, you crazy Scot.
“LIV’s Anti-Doping Policy is designed to be thorough and transparent. Unlike some other tours, LIV enforces these rules rigorously, which made this situation particularly challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties — they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport. I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve conducted myself throughout it. Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago.”
Catch ya on the links...or not for another month! Gutted for my guy but you gotta follow the rules. Let this be a lesson for all the traveling pros - NO VICKS!!!
