Man who died at Iowa City golf course Wednesday identified

Iowa City, IA - Johnson County authorities have identified the victim of a drowning that occurred at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Joint Emergency Communications Center received a call around 1:39 p.m. reporting a drowning at one of the ponds located on the golf course property in south Iowa City. First responders from the Hills Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service and Johnson County Emergency Management were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews discovered 38-year-old Christopher Plowman of Tiffin, Iowa fully submerged in the water. Plowman had reportedly become trapped underneath some maintenance equipment near the pond.

Christopher Plowman, 38, from Tiffin, Iowa , was found 'fully submerged' in the water at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City at 1.39pm Wednesday, police said

Firefighters and paramedics were able to retrieve Plowman from the water, but he was determined to be deceased by medical personnel. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said Plowman had likely been in the pond for an unknown duration of time before the discovery was made.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is now underway by the Sheriff's Office. Foul play is not currently suspected, but authorities are working to understand how and why Plowman ended up in the pond. The sheriff's office release said Plowman had been in the water for an "unknown amount of time."

This marks the third reported drowning in Johnson County this summer. Two other victims, a 20-year-old man in Iowa City and 34-year-old man in Cedar Rapids, both died after separate incidents at Lake Macbride in June.

Plowman was 'trapped under maintenance equipment and had been there for an unknown amount of time,' according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office

The investigation into Plowman's death remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office.

My thoughts are with Mr. Plowman's loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. This is the third reported drowning in the Iowa City area alone this summer. I hope officials and course superintendents across the region will re-examine safety protocols and warnings to try and prevent similar heartbreaking accidents going forward. Water hazards are an inherent part of the game, but we must do everything possible to play safely.
