World No. 1 Gets Emotional at Olympics: Scottie Scheffler Bawls During Gold Medal Ceremony

You know it's a big moment when even the ice-cold World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lets the waterworks flow. Fresh off his epic comeback victory to snag the men's Olympic golf gold in Paris, Scheffler took his place on the top podium and absolutely lost it during the medal ceremony.

Through 62 holes at Le Golf National, Scheffler hardly cracked as he birdied five of his final six holes to shock the world and hunt down Tommy Fleetwood (silver) and Hideki Matsuyama (bronze). But when the Stars and Stripes started wafting and the anthem started blasting, it seemed even the Avatar of Zen himself couldn't hold back the tears.

During the playing of the national anthem, TV cameras showed Scheffler mouthing the lyrics to the anthem. As the melody built to a crescendo, he began to cry and covered his eyes as the emotions of the moment overwhelmed him.

After collecting himself, Scheffler said winning gold for Team USA was "pretty high up there" among his career achievements that already include six wins this season and a Green Jacket. Can't say I blame him - nothing pumps you up like million patriots behind you.

“It’s pretty high up there. Anytime you’re able to represent your country is pretty special. This was a fun week and it was great representing the USA, and I’m proud to be going home with a medal,” Scheffler said, “I’m not big on comparisons or anything like that. I’m just going to enjoy this moment. Like I said I take tremendous pride in representing my country, and I’m very proud to be going home back to the USA with a medal.”

“I would say, first and foremost, I’m proud of the country that I’m from; I’m proud to be an American,” Scheffler said. “You know I got emotional the other night watching the gold medal ceremony for the [U.S.] women’s gymnastics [team]. It’s the same thing like when you go to a sporting event and you hear everyone in the stands sing the national anthem, it’s a pretty special thing to be a part of… it was just very emotional being up there on stage as the flag is being raised and sitting there singing the national anthem. It’s definitely one I’ll remember for a long time.”

So if you ever thought our man Scotty was devoid of feelings, think again. The Olympics clearly means something special, and watching him ugly cry in Paris was strangely heartwarming? Heartwarming and hilarious? You be the judge, just glad he saved the waterworks for after securing the bag. Now pass the Kleenex while I try not to feel things.
