North Berwick, Scotland - Rory McIlroy broke his silence after the US Open by holding a press conference at the Genesis Scottish Open on Wednesday, where he strongly defended his caddie Harry Diamond against criticism following McIlroy's collapse at Pinehurst.

It had been almost four weeks since McIlroy's stunning meltdown over the final three holes at the US Open, relinquishing a six shot lead. In that time, the world number one had stayed away from public view and social media as he processed the disastrous finish.

McIlroy acknowledged he had time to reflect during his time away from competition. But his relaxed demeanor changed when questioned about Diamond receiving blame for McIlroy's failures to convert majors into wins during their partnership.

The four-time major champion was clearly annoyed at critics taking aim at Diamond. He called out golf analysts Hank Haney and former pro Smylie Kaufman directly for their comments.

"You know, it’s certainly unfair," McIlroy said of the criticism Diamond faced. “Hank Haney has never been in that position. Smylie has been in that position once. I love Smylie, and he was out there with us on 18, but just because Harry is not as vocal or loud with his words as other caddies, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t say anything and that he doesn’t do anything. I just wish that, you know, these guys that criticize when things don’t go my way, they never say anything good when things do go my way.”

McIlroy pointed to Diamond's role in his 12 wins since they joined forces in late 2017, including FedEx Cup victories and Ryder Cup triumphs. Yet the critics were never there to praise Diamond's contributions during successes, only to critique in defeat, according to McIlroy.

“So where were they when I won Dubai earlier year, or Quail Hollow, or the two FedExCups that I’ve won with Harry, or the two Ryder Cups … or whatever?” McIlroy said scornfully. “They are never there to say Harry did such a great job when I win, but they are always there to criticize when we don’t win.”

While McIlroy's major drought has continued with Diamond on the bag, his caddie has had a front row seat for agonizing losses at Pinehurst and St. Andrews. But McIlroy doubts the characterization that Diamond's calm demeanor has held him back.

"At the end of the day, they are not there. They are not in the arena. They are not the ones hitting the shots and making the decisions. Someone said to me once, if you would never take advice from these people, you would never take their criticisms, either. Certainly wouldn’t go to Hank Haney for advice. I love Smylie, but I think I know what I’m doing, and so does Harry." McIlroy stated.

While the huge loss continues to sting, Rory's steadfast defense of his friend and caddie demonstrates the unbreakable bond they have formed. As they compete for more major championships, they clearly have a "win together, lose together" mindset. But for now, Rory is content to have Diamond by his side as he prepares to defend his Scottish Open title this week.

What are the key moments in Rory McIlroy and Harry Diamond's partnership

I've always been struck by how natural the partnership between Rory and Harry seems. They just get each other in a way that you don't often see between players and their caddies. I think a big reason for that is their long history growing up playing golf together in Northern Ireland.

Becoming Rory's Caddie

McIlroy and Diamond have been close friends since childhood in Holywood, Northern Ireland.

When McIlroy parted ways with his long-time caddy JP Fitzgerald in 2017, he asked his best pal Diamond to take up the duty.

Many people assumed it would be a temporary arrangement, but McIlroy and Diamond chose to make it a long-term collaboration.

Major Championship Near Misses

During Diamond's tenure as McIlroy's caddy, McIlroy has had several major championship close calls, including at Pinehurst in 2014 and St. Andrews in 2022.

Some pundits have questioned whether Diamond's softer style is suitable for McIlroy in high-pressure major situations.

Crucial Advice at Quail Hollow

At the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, Diamond's counsel to take a penalty drop on the 72nd hole rather than trying to hack the ball out of difficulty proved critical to McIlroy's victory.
McIlroy hailed Diamond's decision-making as a crucial component in his victory.
