Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler rage over 'absolute disgrace' PGA Tour rule

Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler rage over 'absolute disgrace' PGA Tour rule

You won't believe the drama that went down at the BMW Championship this weekend! Top stars Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler absolutely lost it on officials after encountering some freaky driver issues.

From what I gathered scouring footage and interviewing witnesses, Fitzpatrick spotted a crack forming in his Titleist driver during the final round. Now normally that wouldn't phase this cool, calm Englishman. But when he asked to replace the club, that's when chaos erupted!

Reps told Fitzpatrick the crack wasn't significant enough to warrant a replacement under the rules. Y'all, you should have seen the steam coming out of his ears! He let the official have it, calling the decision a "disgrace" and "absolute joke." Can't say I blame him though - who wants to play a major with a defective club?!

"It's an absolute disgrace," Fitzpatrick complained as he walked down the 8th fairway. "Are you telling me I now have to use a 3-wood for the rest of the round."

Clearly still steaming after his bogey, Fitzy told the ref he'd make sure something was done. And booyyy did he ever on that 9th tee! Our boy unscrews the offending driver right then and there. But not before another eruption where he's like "It's caved in. There's an obvious crack there that's causing a defect of ball flight. This is outrageous, it's an absolute disgrace. I've literally just watched a ball do a completely different thing from the whole morning. It couldn't be more obvious."

Things got even more heated. Fitz apparently smacked one way offline compared to his normal ball flight. When he inspected the driver, the crack had gotten wider for sure. Another confrontation ensued where our boy Matt pulled the club apart right then and there to prove his point.

But the drama didn't end there. Scottie Scheffler, who was already grumpy about his round, joined in and literally felt the crack for himself. The Masters champ backed up Fitzpatrick that the damage was altering his shots. Those two were seeing red, just yelling at the official about how "ridiculous" the whole thing was.

"You can feel the crack. The damage to the club is making the club not perform. It's been damaged throughout the course of play. That's the first shot offline he's hit all day and it carried about 80 yards shorter."

In the end, Fitzpatrick dropped two strokes on the day and missed the cut due to Crack-gate. His season is already over thanks to that broken driver! As for Scheffler, he reckons the uproar didn't help his mindset either on his way to a mediocre 72.

No doubt we'll be hearing more about this insane situation in the coming days. Major props to Fitzpatrick for keeping his cool as much as he could though. And kudos to Scheffler for lending his fellow stragglers some backup. One things for sure - you don't want to piss off these top guns!

In the end, Golf Twitter is still buzzing over Club-gate long after the final putts. The drama, the anger - this is the type of juicy golf gossip I live for here at Golfaq! Major props to Fitzpatrick for keeping his cool (somewhat). You know big changes are coming from this fiasco. Stay tuned...
